Discover the Art of Creating Your Own Custom Embroidered Map Quilt

Embark on a creative journey to hand embroider and quilt a personalised map of a place that holds deep significance for you. In this masterclass, you will celebrate the places that shape your story—whether it’s your home, a cherished travel destination, or a place that exists only in memory. This isn’t about following templates; it’s about transforming your personal connection into a unique work of art.

You’ll work with your chosen map, learn how to develop and transfer your design onto fabric, and master a variety of stitches to capture the essence of your place. Drawing inspiration from personal objects, photographs, and treasured memories, we’ll explore adding meaningful motifs and patterns to enrich your quilt. Please note we will make a piece measuring 15 ” x 15″ inches (approx) during class. The course will also guide you through quilting and finishing your piece, so it’s ready to display.

This masterclass is a distillation of my signature approach to creating bespoke embroidered map quilts—an art form that weaves together narrative, history, and belonging. Unlike any other course, this experience is designed to help you celebrate your personal connection to place. You’ll receive a carefully curated material kit, complete with fabrics, threads, needles, and wadding, delivered to your door.

What’s Included:

  • A curated material kit (fabric front 15″x15″, backing, embroidery threads, needles, and wadding)
  • 6 hours of live, guided instruction on embroidery, quilting, and finishing
  • An illustrated artist talk on my creative process, with examples of my map quilts and historical influences
  • Access to a private Facebook group for sharing progress and connecting with fellow students
  • Course recording available for 4 weeks

What You Need to Bring:

  • A printout of your map (to fit the fabric ie 15″x15″ approx.) and any meaningful images or objects for inspiration
  • Embroidery essentials: hoop, scissors, ruler, erasable pen
  • A laptop or tablet with a camera and speaker

About Me, your creative guide

I’m Ekta Kaul, an artist who finds joy in exploring themes of place, history, and belonging through the art of narrative embroidery and abstract painting. Over the past 18 years, I’ve honed my craft as a working artist, with my map quilts acquired for the permanent collections of esteemed institutions like the Museum of London and the Crafts Council. My book, Kantha, published by Bloomsbury UK, celebrates the rich traditions of this art form. Alongside my work as an artist, I regularly collaborate with world-class institutions, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, to share my passion for stitch with students from around the world. I’m thrilled to bring that experience to this masterclass and can’t wait to guide you in creating your own meaningful map quilt.
